Condensation

Exeter has a damp climate especially in winter. Mould is most often caused by condensation which forms damp patches on walls and ceilings.

The following steps help avoid condensation.

What is condensation? #

Moisture is always present in the air. As air temperature reduces, it cannot hold the moisture and drops of water appear on colder surfaces. It typically occurs in corners, on or near windows, or behind furniture where there is less movement of air.

Step 1: prevent moisture #

Use tumble dryers and outside clothes lines when appropriate.

Step 2: ventilate #

Keep a small window ajar when someone is using a room. When using the kitchen or bathroom, keep a window open and switch on any extractor fans.

Step 3: heat #

Keep your home warm during the winter months to avoid condensation, damp, and mould.Heating costs are less than a full re-decoration.

Step 4: treat mould #

Remove mould using a fungicide wash. Always use gloves and follow the safety precautions.

Do NOT brush or vacuum mould: it can increase the risk of respiratory problems.
